Position Overview

Based in Burlington, ON, the Chief Operating Officer, Equiton Living (“COO”) is a critical leadership role who will hold full executive accountability for Equiton Living’s division. Reporting to the President and CFO, the COO is responsible for delivering strategic and operational objectives for Income Producing departments, including Operations, Finance, and Asset Management. The COO will focus on on-going operations to ensure maximum productivity and financial health of Equiton Living.

The COO will guide Equiton towards its long-term success by providing strategic and operational leadership, ensuring the business achieves growth and continues its improvements in efficiency and profitability by establishing long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies. The COO will require strong leadership that will act as a catalyst for the development of a high-performance, engaged, accountable and growth-focused organization. A public-facing ambassador for the division, the COO brings a proven track record of successful property and asset management experience.

The COO will be a strategic thinker with deep roots in property and asset management who has successfully navigated fast paced and entrepreneurial organizations within the real estate industry. A technically oriented and inspiring business leader with an ability to see “the big picture,” the successful candidate will possess proven leadership experience as a Senior Executive leading fully integrated real estate organizations of similar scope, scale and complexity. A solutions-oriented and customer-focused leader who will be comfortable with ambiguity, the successful COO will bring a proven track record of managing complexity, bringing an unwavering focus and a high level of attention to detail to the organization’s business objectives. Role Responsibilities

Operations:

The COO will oversee all operational aspects of Equiton’s income-producing multifamily properties portfolio. The COO will be responsible for strategic planning, operational excellence, asset management and financial performance, ensuring long-term value creation and competitive positioning in the market. This executive leader will collaborate closely with cross- functional teams, including acquisitions, marketing, finance, and human resources, to execute Equiton’s strategic objectives.

  • Lead and integrate new acquisitions, ensuring seamless transitions and operational alignment with company goals.
  • Implement and refine operating procedures, benchmarking tools, and KPI scorecards to drive operational efficiency and performance.
  • Regularly review property performance, financial reports, and market conditions to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ignite passion for ESG in teams and use transformational leadership to drive integration and compliance.
  • Champion innovation by leveraging technology, automation, and ESG principles to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Maximize financial performance through strategic cost management, revenue optimization, and ROI-driven decision-making.
  • Approve and oversee the execution of capital improvement plans, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including investors, tenants, and industry partners.
  • Represent Equiton at industry events, trade shows, and conferences, positioning the company as a leader in the real estate investment space.

Leadership & Culture

  • Provide leadership, management and vision to help grow Equiton Living.
  • Foster and develop collaboration between departments and other internal groups across the Equiton group of companies; meet regularly with department heads; solutioning of issues/problems.
  • Manage, motivate and mentor talent within COO’s reporting structure to build a highly inclusive culture and ensure team members thrive.
  • Set and monitor departmental performance goals to ensure that progress is made and when required, corrective action is taken.

Labour Relations

  • Establish and maintain a positive labour relations environment, and healthy and productive workplace/sites.
  • Ensure Equiton always acts in good faith and builds a reputation as a fair employer.

Health & Safety

  • Build a safety legacy; ensuring Equiton exemplifies the highest standards of health and safety for our people and communities.

Metrics and Financial Management

  • Accountable for the overall fiscal responsibility of Equiton Living and all financial/P&L reporting.
  • Focus on establishing KPIs and financial scorecards, provide regular reporting to President & CFO.

12-24 MONTH DELIVERABLES

  • Within the first 90 days, the COO will orient and familiarize themselves with the organization and the company’s overall vision, earning the trust and respect of the current executive team, the founders and the broader organization.
  • The COO will establish credibility as the leader of Equiton Living and will successfully enhance a compelling long-term growth-oriented strategy and plan of action that includes a refinement of the broader organizational culture. In addition, the COO will operationalize a long-term business growth strategy.
  • The COO will demonstrate competency, agility and the ability to proactively and effectively act a strategic advisor, successfully partnering with the President & CFO the executive team and other business leaders.
  • The COO will provide forward thinking and proactive leadership to the broader Equiton Living team, successfully meeting the current and future needs of the business. The result will be an inspired, engaged and accountable team that works collaboratively and cross-functionally.
  • With a proactive, change-oriented mindset and an ability to constructively challenge the status quo (to support business growth and cultural improvements), the COO will serve as an outstanding mentor, coach and developer of talent, facilitating development support for all employees including senior leadership talent and succession planning candidates.
  • A passionate and dedicated advocate of the Equiton brand, the COO will promote and exhibit the values of the organization while having a deep appreciation of the complexities of the business and the industry as well as a genuine understanding of the organization’s values and brand differentiators.

Desired Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will bring a Bachelor’s Degree in business or a related field and at least 20 years of proven experience as an enterprise leader of a sizeable, complex multifamily real estate business, including operations, asset management, and property management involving acquisitions, new builds, and turnarounds business. An MBA or CPA is considered an asset.
  • A self-starter with a low-ego and entrepreneurial orientation, the COO excels and thrives in complex, multi-faceted numbers driven organizations where making bold decisions and embracing challenge are celebrated. After completing her Master’s in Geography at the University of Toronto, Katie worked in consulting in the environmental non-profit sector where she conducted policy analysis and delivered workshops on sustainable development. Lisa’s deep background in financial services, relationship building, and customer service coupled with her background in operations and support has been instrumental to the firm’s Research and Operations division. Prior to joining Thorek/Scott and Partners, Lisa worked for over 10 years in a large Canadian Bank in front facing, client operational roles. She has held multiple executive leadership positions in the education sector and as CEO was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization including Human Resources, Operations, Information Technology, Finance, Capital, and Leadership.

Lisa brings her insight and experience to executive recruitment. She is a highly motivated and goal-oriented professional dedicated to finding high quality talent.

Lisa has worked with multiple stakeholders within the community and at the Provincial level. She has trained senior executives on Strategic Planning and Implementation in Canada and the United States. She has taught Masters’ level courses and College programs. She has authored documents on Strategic Planning, Poverty, Succession Planning and Leadership Development.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a Master’s degree in Leadership/Administration. Lisa completed the Executive Leadership programs at Rotman School of Management and the Richard Ivey School of Business as well as earning multiple certificates at the Queens Executive Education Program.

Lisa belongs to several professional organizations including the Professional Women’s Network, Equal Voice and Elevate. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, travelling, and giving back to her community.

Sari is well known for her caring and friendly demeanour. She is passionate about helping people with an emphasis on providing an individualized human experience. He prides himself as a recruiter who is transparent, a great communicator and gives honest feedback.

Steven is passionate about travelling, having visited over 130 countries, and about his Toronto Maple Leafs.

Faye Thorek is an accomplished executive search consultant with over 40 years of experience in the Canadian recruitment market. Known for her keen insight and compassionate dedication to her work, Faye envisions herself as an advocate for those with whom she conducts business. Over the years, Faye has consulted numerous companies on how to best craft their strategic vision and then taken the lead on executing that mandate. She has spoken on recruitment and search issues to a wide range of audiences.

Outside of the office, Faye is also a committed investor in people. She volunteers with Out of the Cold, Kids.now, and Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO).
