Our Client

Our client is the Canadian Branch of a full-stack global bank.  The group has more than 130 offices worldwide.  The North American division offers commercial and investment banking services to its corporate and institutional clients.  We have partnered with the Chief Risk Officer of the Canadian Branch to source a new team member to join as Vice President, Enterprise Risk Management.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer, the Director of Credit Risk will play a key leadership role in overseeing credit risk and portfolio management activities across the Bank’s Canadian operations. This is a high-impact position that offers the opportunity to shape the financial risk management framework and collaborate closely with senior leadership, front office teams, and global stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include leading the transaction review and approval process, designing and implementing stress testing and scenario analysis frameworks, conducting in-depth portfolio risk assessments, and enhancing risk management policies and reporting processes. The Director will also support risk appetite development, participate in strategic planning, and engage with external regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and transparency.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the financial risk management function – credit risk with a particular emphasis on transaction review / deals.
  • Lead the development and implementation of stress testing, scenario analysis, and sensitivity testing frameworks to assess the resilience of the bank’s portfolios under various economic scenarios.
  • Perform portfolio deep dives and analysis & assessment of risk exposures along with, identifying emerging risks and opportunities.
  • Develop and implement robust risk management policies, procedures, and frameworks in alignment with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with senior management, Front office / Coverage bankers business units, and other stakeholders to optimize risk-return trade-offs and support strategic decision-making.
  • Participate in annual risk appetite refresh specifically with regards to establishing, back testing and calibrating Credit & portfolio Metrics, Limits and KRIs
  • Ensure the timely and accurate reporting of risk metrics, key risk indicators (KRIs), and risk appetite metrics to senior management and relevant committees.
  • Support long- and short-term planning, new product development, Credit Portfolio Committee and risk management meetings.
  • Network within the industry through meetings, events and involvement with trade organizations to better understand emerging risk trends and credit products.
  • Stay abreast of market developments, regulatory changes, and industry trends impacting financial risk management, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction to the Front office / Coverage bankers, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with regulators, auditors, and external partners, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and audit standards.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related field. Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., FRM, CFA) is highly desirable.
  • Over 10 years of progressive experience in financial risk management, portfolio management, or related roles within a major bank or management consultancy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative analysis, statistical modeling, and risk assessment methodologies, with a strong focus on portfolio risk management.
  • Display an advanced understanding of credit markets and risk analysis to create models, risk ratings, loss estimates and risk management strategies. Demonstrate a working knowledge of credit structuring.
  • Proven leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams, drive strategic initiatives, and foster a culture of risk management excellence.
  • Deep understanding of financial markets, products, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to translate complex concepts into actionable insights and strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of delivering innovative solutions to complex risk management challenges.
  • Proficiency in risk management software and tools, as well as advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

After completing her Master’s in Geography at the University of Toronto, Katie worked in consulting in the environmental non-profit sector where she conducted policy analysis and delivered workshops on sustainable development. Katie continues to pursue her passions of environmental protection by volunteering with local environmental non-profit organizations.

Lisa is thrilled to be a part of the team at Thorek/Scott and Partners. Lisa’s deep background in financial services, relationship building, and customer service coupled with her background in operations and support has been instrumental to the firm’s Research and Operations division. Prior to joining Thorek/Scott and Partners, Lisa worked for over 10 years in a large Canadian Bank in front facing, client operational roles. Having worked for large organizations in the past, she is delighted to be part of a close-knit group and enjoys the upbeat office and friendly environment at Thorek/Scott and Partners.

Lisa brings her insight and experience to executive recruitment. She is a highly motivated and goal-oriented professional dedicated to finding high quality talent.

Lisa has worked with multiple stakeholders within the community and at the Provincial level. She has trained senior executives on Strategic Planning and Implementation in Canada and the United States. She has taught Masters’ level courses and College programs. Faye Thorek is an accomplished executive search consultant with over 40 years of experience in the Canadian recruitment market. Known for her keen insight and compassionate dedication to her work, Faye envisions herself as an advocate for those with whom she conducts business. Over the years, Faye has consulted numerous companies on how to best craft their strategic vision and then taken the lead on executing that mandate.
